Complete List of Dragon*Con Voice Actor Events

I’ve been asked by several individuals attending Dragon*Con if I would list all of the voice actor panels I’m involved with along with other related panels of note. As you will see below, there are so many related events that this was a rather daunting task. I hope my efforts will be useful as a guide to those attending the con.

Please note that the schedule and guests listed below are subject to change. Check The Daily Dragon regularly for up-to-the-minute schedule and guest updates.

Locations for each panel/event are not listed due to the possibility of changes. For those attending Dragon*Con please check your Pocket Program Guide, and every morning when you arrive at the con be sure to pick up a copy of The Daily Dragon from the local D*Con Info booth which contains all updates and changes.

Futurama Cast @ Atlanta’s Dragon*Con 2010

Four Three principal Futurama cast members will be attending Dragon*Con in Atlanta, GA September 3-6, 2010.

Billy West, John DiMaggio, Phil LaMarr, and Maurice LaMarche are all scheduled to appear at the con and will be participating in panels hosted by Dragon*Con’s Animation Track.

Billy West and John DiMaggio will be participating in Voice Actors panels (along with Adult Swim voice actors Dana Snyder, C. Martin Croker and George Lowe) on Friday at 4:00 PM in the Hyatt International North Ballroom, and Saturday at 11:30 AM in the Hyatt International South Ballroom.

West, DiMaggio and LaMarr will be featured together in an all-Futurama cast panel on Sunday at 4:00 PM in the Hyatt Cent. I Ballroom.

And according to the Star Wars Track schedule, Phil LaMarr will also be participating in three Star Wars panels. However, the actual Dragon*Con program schedule shows that he will only be involved in the “Clone Wars & Star Wars Cartoons” panel on Monday at 10:00 AM.

We will have a follow-up post to include all of Dragon*Con’s voice actor-related guests, panels and events, and one of our staff will also be attending the con and will provide coverage with audio, video and photos.

Adult Swim Voice Actor Performs in Atlanta Live Show

Voice actor Scott Hilley (Adult Swim’s Squidbillies, Aqua Teen Hunger Force) is starring in and directing “The Golden Age Radio Show” at Expressions Theatre and Film in Atlanta, GA on Saturday, May 29th at 7:30 PM.

This family-friendly event — a live radio theatre-style production — will feature performances from episodes of two classic “old time radio” shows and showcase students from Scott’s voice acting workshops (which he teaches regularly in the Atlanta area).

And those of you who’ve been reading this blog for any length of time will know that outside of the “About” page above that I normally do not mention any projects I’m involved with. However, I’m both proud and honored to say that Scott cast me in this show and I’ll be performing a couple Frank Sinatra standards as part of the show’s live music as well.

Tickets are only $5 for this show. Seating is limited and tickets are not available for pre-order. They can only be purchased in person at Expressions Theatre the night of the event.

And on a related note, Ryan Raddatz says of the three WordGirl Emmy nominations via his official site — RyanRaddatz.com: “I’m thrilled to be a part of the WordGirl team, and doubly thrilled to be recognized for our work.” Raddatz added that a PBS series he helped write, Fizzy’s Lunch Lab, “is nominated in the curiously named ‘New Approaches’ category.”

Jolly Green-Grant Get Hitched

Congratulations to newlyweds Seth Green (Family Guy, Robot Chicken, Titan Maximum) and Clare Grant who tied the knot May 1st during a private ceremony at a vineyard outside of San Francisco, CA. (Weird Al Yankovic was a wedding guest.)

Grant is a native of Memphis, TN and has voiced characters on Robot Chicken.

Kenny, Hines Talk ‘Superhero Squad’

ComicBookResources.com has an interview with Tom Kenny detailing his work on The Superhero Squad Show as the voice Captain America, Iron Man, M.O.D.O.K., Juggernaut, Colossus and other characters on the show. Kenny also talks about his love for all things geeky and reveals some tidbits about the show’s season finale.

Here’s what Kenny has to say about voice acting as a career:

I messed around in rock and roll bands when I was a little kid, and I still do. Then I kind of stumbled my way into standup and sketch comedy. Eventually, I became employed in that while doing the occasional voiceover, but the whole time I was doing those things, I thought that voiceover was the thing I was best at. I wished that could be 98% of my pie instead of two percent. It’s kind of a tough nut to crack. I made a living as a standup for many years and eventually the voiceover thing was able to supplant a lot of that stuff. It turns out that I was right – voiceover is better. [Laughs] Voiceover is the best-kept secret in entertainment.

It’s a perfect job for what you would call the shy show-off, you know what I mean? The person who doesn’t exactly want to be famous and deal with all of the horrific stuff that being an on camera celebrity brings to your life, but you still want to make a living as an actor. If you’re not driven by wanting to see your face on the cover of “People Magazine,” then being a voice actor is the best. It’s all of the fun of being an actor without any of the mess.

CBR CBR also interviews Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s Cheryl Hines who voices Stardust, herald of Galactus (voiced by George Takei), on the 2-part season finale of The Superhero Squad Show airing Feb. 13th and 20th at 7:30 PM on Cartoon Network.

Says Hines of her voice acting experience:

The first time you do this, it’s such a strange feeling, because you’re in this booth that has this big glass window and there are usually, I don’t know, five to eight people on the other side staring at you with their headphones on. You can’t really hear what they’re saying, unless they want you to hear what they’re saying, and then they push a little button and say something to you. Otherwise, you’ll do a take and see them all talking. “Oh no, what’s going on in there?” Then they’ll push the button and go, “That was good, but let’s just try it one more time.” [Laughs] They’re always super calm when they talk to you, because they don’t want you getting rattled.

I remember the first time I did it, I was sweating. You’re not sure if you’re doing it right. You don’t really know what you’re doing. After you do a few [takes], you realize that there’s actually no right or wrong. The people on the other side of the glass, they’re listening and they’re really good at imagining the world that you’re creating.

You are so exhausted at the end of recording something like this. It’s very draining. I mean, let’s be honest, I’m not digging ditches, but your whole body is all tense and you’re trying to get it right and you’re so in it and concentrating so hard for three or four hours at a time. When it’s over, it feels like you just ran a marathon. Plus, with everybody’s eyes all on you, everyone’s listening to every little swallow, and God help you if you have any other body noises. [Laughs] It can be very stressful! But it’s weird. It’s a different way of working.

Dee Bradley Baker Interviewed

BurbankLeader.com has a photo and interview with Dee Bradley Baker discussing his role as the grouchy screwdriver “Turner” on Playhouse Disney’s Handy Manny.

Baker says he has been performing since he was 9. “The school I was going to was producing the musical ‘Oliver.’ I auditioned, I’d never done a play before, and they gave me the role of Oliver.”

Baker says he’s “done a show almost every year since, if not on a stage, then in a theme park or other venues”: “I have always performed because I liked doing it so much.”

Baker adds that he enjoys being a voice actor as opposed to on-camera because he likes the anonymity and it gives him an opportunity to play a variety of characters.

“If you get on [an on-camera] show that’s a big hit, that might be the last show you ever do, or at least the only show you’ll do while it’s up and running. Off camera as a voice actor, I can do something for Disney or monsters for a game for teenagers. It offers great flexibility. Anonymity is a valuable asset of the career; you can go buy a rutabaga and not be mobbed at the grocery store.”

Want to Audition for Family Guy or The Simpsons?

On Feb. 1st, Backstage.com published a list of TV Pilot Production Listings. Now, I’ll grant that unless you’re a working actor, that might not be of any interest to you. And for animation fans, the list is worth noting for details on upcoming animated productions.

But both beginning and professional voice actors should find this HUGELY interesting as it includes contact info for the casting directors of such popular animated shows as Family Guy, American Dad and The Simpsons.

But before I share that info, please note Backstage’s preface to their article:

The following listings are not casting notices but instead reflect the best general information available about current casting assignments. Do your homework and use them wisely. Do not phone or visit casting directors’ offices. Unless otherwise instructed, all contact with casting directors should be through the mail. Blind mass mailings are not recommended.

And I must also emphasize that this is not a notice for an “open call” or even an audition, frankly. However, you could *submit* for an audition by sending a demo through the mailing addresses Backstage.com provides. Chances are very small that such a demo would even be heard, but there’s no harm in submitting anyway.

You’re likely as surprised as I am to see King of the Hill mentioned, especially since FOX announced August 2009 that the one-hour season finale would effectively end the series. I don’t think fans should take this as any kind of sign — or even a glimmer of hope — that further production for the series is planned. There have been no official announcements to date otherwise.

As an addendum to Backstage’s article, I have a related list for which I have opted to not disclose the source out of professional courtesy since it was from an agency.

Update: 2.11.2010 — I have tracked down what I believe to be the original source of the casting information which I received via an agency in mid-January.

The source is NowCasting.com — a reputable casting site widely used throughout the TV/film industry. Some TV/film productions I’ve worked on personally as background, stand-in and in a featured role have posted casting notices through this site. (Just to name one: Tyler Perry Studios.)

Note that the names of casting directors ARE included, but no direct contact information is given. If you want that info, you’ll have to track it down on your own or “upgrade” to a paid membership with NowCasting as it mentions on the linked pdf file.

The following list (which according to the document was originally published Jan. 7th, 2010) is worth noting not only for the “currently casting” info but also for the current and upcoming animated series and TV specials (aka “MOW” or “movie-of-the-week”) included in the list which are related to productions which air (or will air) on FOX, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. Update: 2.09.2010 — Following the feedback on sites which have also carried this news, it seems I must point out they are neither “recasting” nor “replacing” any of the cast members for the recurring series listed. Backstage.com merely provided the contact address for the casting directors. And NowCasting.com’s list which mentions that shows like Family Guy and American Dad are “currently casting” means that they are possibly casting for incidental characters, guest stars, etc. — *not* the main or supporting cast.

Update: 2.11.2010 — According to one of Futurama’s writers, the show “isn’t casting voice actors.”

Update: 4.08.2010 — NowCasting.com published an updated list on 3.09.2010. And my apologies that I am just now updating this article following this new information, but I was in Japan for two weeks when this notice was released and am just now catching up on backlogged messages.

Note that no animated Disney or Nickelodeon projects are included in NowCasting’s list. If you’d like to see the new and continuing animated productions for each of these networks, toonzone has coverage of Nickelodeon’s Upfront 2010 and Disney Channel/Disney XD’s 2010-2011 Programming Announcements. Cartoon Network’s Upfront 2010 is scheduled for April 21st.

Backstage.com also has a comprehensive list of Animation Production Companies (last updated 6.09.2009), some of which are seeking voiceover demos (as noted). But make sure you not only follow Backstage’s advice for submissions, but also note the note individual studios’ guidelines for submitting demos. And bear in mind that in most cases “demo” refers to a reel of animation samples, not voiceovers.

Greg Proops Talks Star Wars Villain

StarWars.com interviews comedian/actor Greg Proops on voicing Fode, one of two heads of the Podrace announcers in The Phantom Menace and villain Senator Tal Merrik in The Clone Wars episode “Voyage of Temptation.”

Event: Voice of Zorak Hosts Rare Cartoon Showcase

C. Martin Croker (aka Clay Croker) — animation director, artist, writer and voice actor for several of CN’s Adult Swim shows (most notably as the voice of Zorak and Moltar) — will be hosting an encore presentation of his “To Hell With Hitler” rare 16mm WWII cartoon showcase at the Plaza Theatre in Atlanta, GA.
