VAs on TV: Patrick Warburton

The new season of the CBS sitcom Rules of Engagement debuted March 2nd, starring Patrick Warburton and David Spade (who both co-starred in Disney’s animated comedy The Emperor’s New Groove). Spade had a recurring role as Mr. Manners on Beavis and Butthead, and has been involved in a few other animated projects as well.

Warburton, on the other hand, has been very prolific in animation voiceovers, most notably as the voice of Joe Swanson on Family Guy, Brock Samson on The Venture Bros., and Buzz Lightyear on Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.

In a recent interview with TV Guide, Warburton had this to say about the difference between doing voiceovers and television work:

Neither one has a huge time commitment. If I’m doing voiceover work, then I’m probably getting out to play golf that day, whereas I have a long commute with the show. So it comes down to golf. [Laughs] I love being a part of the animated objects, because it’s fun waiting to see how it’s going to turn out. But doing this half-hour show is fun. We have a great writing team, and it has such great potential. I’m hoping the network will give it the support that it deserves. Hopefully, this is our year for this one and I wouldn’t mind doing it for a few more years.

In related news, Collider.com was on the Rules of Engagement set for an episode taping and has video interviews with Warburton and the rest of the cast.

Rules of Engagement currently airs on CBS Monday nights at 9:30 PM. Check your local listings for showtimes in your area. You can also watch full episodes of the sitcom online at CBS.com.
